Ostia et les alentours

CAMPING INTERNAZIONALE CASTELFUSANO

Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica, 15 minutes from the campsite, is a must-see archaeological site, the home of the ancient port of Rome and the city that grew around it, the point of arrival of all goods bound for Rome by sea. Ostia is Latin for « mouth »; Ostia was Rome’s outlet to the sea, at the mouth of the Tiber. The site is known for its excellently preserved ancient buildings, streets, the amphitheatre and baths, which include mosaics and frescoes.

Port Of Trajan

After the construction of the Port of Claudius, inaugurated in 64 AD, Rome’s increased need for supplies required the construction of a new dock, which was built by the Emperor Trajan.
The new port was constructed to a hexagonal form, and was linked to a new canal to the Tiber, in order to facilitate the transfer of commodities to Rome. The coast today is about 3 km away from the ancient Portus, which is now in the middle of the Airport infrastructure, the road and motorway network and the advance of urbanisation. In this context, the archaeological area is also an unexpected oasis in terms of its natural profile, thanks to the presence of wetlands and rich vegetation. The extent of the ancient city can be calculated at around 65 hectares for the period after the construction of the curtain wall, i.e. the 5th century.

State Nature Reserve Of The Roman Coast

Established in 1996, the State Nature Reserve of the Roman Coast is one of the most unique in the entire Italian national system of Protected Areas. Measuring 15,900 hectares, i.e. about twice the national park of Circeo, and within its never interfered with perimeter (over 140 km long), the Nature Reserve includes a mosaic of natural environments that have escaped urbanisation. It also includes evergreen forests, riverbanks and mouths, dunes, wetlands, stretches of Mediterranean scrub, and surprisingly beautiful tracts of the Roman Campagna. The agricultural landscapes are also different, dominated by straight lines of canals, the drains of coastal land reclamation works carried out since the end of the 19th century

Hadrian's Villa and Villa D'Este At Tivoli

The Villa d’Este, a masterpiece of Italian gardening included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites, has an impressive collection of fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water and musical fountains, and was a frequently copied model for Mannerist and Baroque gardens across Europe.
